South Africa Celebrates Major Infrastructure Milestones: Newlyn PX Terminal and Tetra Pak Manufacturing Plant Inaugurated

April 2024

South Africa is set to mark a significant moment in its economic development with the inauguration ceremony of the Newlyn PX Terminal and the Tetra Pak Manufacturing plant. These milestones stand as tangible outcomes of the commitments made during the South African Investment Conference, showcasing the nation's progress in infrastructure development and industrial innovation.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya highlighted the importance of these projects, emphasizing their role in advancing the country's logistics capacity and global competitiveness. The Newlyn PX Terminal, located in Bayhead adjacent to Durban's bustling port, represents a monumental achievement in infrastructure development. Originally slated for a R2-billion investment, the terminal has surpassed expectations, completing its final phase with an excess of R2.6-billion.

Magwenya underscored the terminal's significance in expanding the nation's logistics capacity and enhancing global competitiveness along the critical NATCOR trade corridor, which links Johannesburg to the port of Durban. Over the past 26 years, the terminal has demonstrated commitment and significant investment in developing transformational logistics infrastructure along major trade corridors.

Moreover, the terminal's completion aligns with the government's objective of transitioning cargo transport from road to rail, facilitating an integrated ecosystem that benefits freight owners, Transnet, and logistics service providers alike.

In parallel, the inauguration of the Tetra Pak Manufacturing plant represents a substantial stride in industrial innovation and sustainability. With an investment exceeding R500 million in 2022, Tetra Pak, a global leader in food processing and packaging, has established a state-of-the-art facility as the premier producer of carton aseptic packaging in Africa.

Magwenya emphasized the plant's role in meeting sustainability standards, supporting a circular economy, and propelling industrial growth. Post-investment, the Tetra Pak Manufacturing plant is now the only state-of-the-art facility in Africa producing carton aseptic packaging for both the domestic market and Africa's export market.

These investments hold strategic importance for South Africa, particularly in the context of the recent commencement of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), opening up new export opportunities. They form a critical industrial base, positioning South Africa to capitalize on regional trade agreements and drive economic growth.
