Tetra Pak launches a comprehensive strategy to drive sustainable and secure food systems.

December 2023

Leading food processing and packaging giant, Tetra Pak, is spearheading a comprehensive initiative to reshape the future of food. Recognizing the urgent need for change, Tetra Pak leverages its industry expertise to drive the transition towards secure, sustainable, and resilient food systems. This builds upon their active role in the Global Dairy Processing Task Force, part of the "Pathways to Dairy Net Zero" climate initiative, where they explore innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in dairy processing.

"Transforming food systems is essential for a healthy planet and thriving communities," emphasizes Charles Brand, Executive Vice President for Processing Solutions & Equipment at Tetra Pak. "Current systems are inefficient and unsustainable, contributing significantly to climate change, food waste, and global hunger."

Tetra Pak proposes four key pathways to accelerate food systems transformation:

1. Sustainable Dairy: Addressing the environmental impact of dairy processing while empowering smallholder farmers through improved productivity and livelihoods.

2. Alternative Protein Innovation: Diversifying food sources with alternative proteins to complement traditional animal protein sources.

3. Reducing Food Loss and Waste: Developing food processing technologies that minimize waste and convert side-streams into valuable products. Tetra Pak's aseptic packaging solutions already play a crucial role by extending shelf life and enabling distribution in areas lacking cold chain infrastructure.

4. Safe Nutrition Access: Designing and deploying sustainable food packaging solutions that preserve quality and improve access to safe food for all.

This commitment extends beyond mere pledges. Tetra Pak, in collaboration with EY Parthenon, released a white paper outlining the critical food systems requirements to nourish both people and planet by 2040.

"We're not just setting ambitious goals," declares Brand, "we're actively shaping the future of food with a data-driven, evidence-based approach. We answer the call for private sector involvement by demonstrating our commitment and outlining a clear roadmap for success."

Tetra Pak actively engages with government stakeholders, policymakers, industry players, customers, and opinion leaders to transform food systems and ensure a brighter future for food.
